Regarding my post below...if you want to know more about me, go to http://members.aol.com/hseagraves for more about me. -- Hugh S., January 26, 1998 at 8:47p

I'm moving. To San Francisco, in the first week of March or so. Just thought I'd see if any Burning Man people are looking for a roommate. Attended my first in '97 and going back every year for the rest of my life. E-mail me if you need a roommate or know someone in the tribe who does. Peace. p.s. Need a job, too. -- Hugh S., January 26, 1998 at 8:40p

THOUSANDS ASK SATAN TO TAKE THEM TO HELL...... check out this gem of a news story regarding The Burning. It can be found at: http://www.charisma.net/strang/cm/stories/cm197105.htm -- Ray Russ, January 26, 1998 at 0:40p

An interesting article appears in the December issue of the New Art Examiner. Entitled 'All the Rage', it does a reasonable job of reportage' though the writer seems to hold both reader and language hostage with the multiple use of terms such as 'schisms', 'deconstruct', 'decontextualize', and other arty poo-pooisms. Still, if you can get past the tone of exclusivity there's a good story to be found. -- Ray Russ, January 26, 1998 at 0:19p

Sorry for the HTML in my last post. I assumed it would get interpreted properly, guess not! -- PeaBoy, January 18, 1998 at 4:01p

I camped next to the Sacred Disorder og the Enigmata at BurningMan 97 and in honor of that, I'd like to say...... <p STYLE="color:red;font-size:20pt"> What the fuck is going on here? </p> -- PeaBoy, January 18, 1998 at 4:00p

SPAM on the BM website? Has it really come to this sad state of affairs? I agree with Desertada, I'm afraid I find Karma's posting to be inappropriate. Why don't you ask for people to play in your band rather than just for their instruments and money? -- Rob the Wop, December 30, 1997 at 6:25a

Reminds me of the 'find the popes in the pizza' contest.... -- Anon., December 29, 1997 at 8:19p

Hey "Karma" (12 postings down)... You're fucking joking us - right? No, really. Is his some kind of test? If not then you have balls bigger than my VW dude.... -- Desertada, December 23, 1997 at 2:21p

I am looking forward to the BM festival for the first time in 98. Living such a tight controled existance every day, day in, day out. A kind of highly regulated insanity. The burning man festival will allow a release,a way to be without being. -- geocola1@themall.net, December 22, 1997 at 10:22p

rusty- i have forwarded you e-mail on to someone who can help you good luck and write back if you dont hear from him soon -- spaceghost, December 16, 1997 at 11:22p

Hey Guys.... Man we are lost here in GA....some of us have been following the Burning Man thing for the past year and want to attend in 98'...there are 3 maybe 4...all of us RN's and willing to take part as a volenteer in the medical part...we need a contact...we have already signed on as rangers but have not got'un anything back yet...so we need to know "whats up"...if anyone else in the Atlanta area is looking to hook up with us ...let me know...later -- Rusty Walker, December 16, 1997 at 10:09a

MORE ABOUT MY TRIBAL MUSIC (following up on preceding message): I should mention to those interested in getting together for music sharing that in addition to my recorder playing, I also play guitar (experimental jazz-thrash, flamenco, Indian raga-style, grunge, and more), keyboards (ambient/electronica, weird eclectic, Philip Glass-style), blues harp, and lots of percussion instruments. -- Mark Mardon, December 14, 1997 at 1:50p

SEEKING TRIBAL MUSICIANS/PRACTICE SPACE IN SF: Greetings fellow music makers. I'd like to connect with other tribal musicians in the Bay Area to organize a music camp and performance at the next Burning Man. If you have or know of an ample, highly acoustic, resonant space where we could gather, rehearse, and share ideas, I'd really appreciate getting the information. Warehouse spaces are possibilities, if they have a fairly warm interior (playing the recorder in cold spaces doesn't work). Any cathedral-like space would probably work. Even a large living room with hardwood floors and high ceilings, shielded from traffic noise, would likely work. I'm a skilled recorder player, playing a wide variety of styles, some of which you've probably never heard played on the recorder before: Andean huaynos, Indian ragas, Baroque, Renaissance, and ancient music, shakahachi-type Japanese melodies, Celtic, Middle Eastern, and American folk tunes, and many of my own compositions, often tribal in nature (think Dead Can Dance). You may have heard me playing at some of the drum circles at the last Burning Man. I play with drummers, other flautists (Native American, Indian, Andean, and Celtic styles), guitarists (acoustic and electric), keyboardists, and singers, and would love to work with anyone who's fairly skilled and wants to create a dynamic music camp and performance experience at BM. Please email me or call if you want to play music or if you know of a space to play/rehearse in. Phone Mark at 621-4274; email mcmardon@sirius.com. Namaste! -- Mark Mardon, December 14, 1997 at 1:39p

Greetings from DALAI LAMA DING DONG! . . . . . . Hey all, Can you help a talented, fledgling band get to Burning Man next year? If you have either musical equipment or money you can donate, DALAI LAMA DING DONG needs you. WHO/WHAT WE ARE: We're a San Francisco-based Faerie band, meaning we've got tribal, sexy, spiritual-yet-cynical, unabashed queer attitudes. We produce an acid-jungle brand of music, with searing vocals, mesmerizing synthesizers, hypnotic drums, exotic flutes, and trippy electric and acoustic guitar playing. At our rehearsals, you'd likely hear anything from trancy Indian raga-style sets to Verve-like wall-of-sound, hard-rockin' numbers, to acid-jazz improv sessions. Our band size fluctuates depending on who's in town (Faeries tend to be Gypsies) and happens to be staying at the big Faerie house where we most often rehearse. But our core group remains five members -- Sri, Tree, Downey, Julian, and Karma -- ranging widely in age, some of us multi-intstrumentalists, others vocalists (we're still seeking a full-time bass player; if anyone's interested in jamming with us on a trial basis, let me know). WHAT WE NEED: Being Radical Faeries, naturally we're artists living on the edge, chronically underemployed because we don't fit easily into the mainstream. So for our band to reach its full potential, we need assistance from generous patrons, anyone who wants to be connected to a very cool band, one that's pushing musical boundaries, drawing on faerie sensibilities to create essentiallly a whole new sub-species of rock/electronica/world beat. Specifically, we need: -- Equipment Donations. Currently much of the equipment we use either doesn't belong to us, or it's not up to par for our needs. We're therefore looking for any/all of the following: € Electric bass guitar € Electric lead guitar € Amps € Monitor speakers € Mikes (preferably with stands) € Guitar synthesizers, pedals, etc. € Magnetic pick-ups for acoustic guitar € Reverb units, delay pedasls € Keyboard synthesizers € Recording/mixing equipment € Drum kit (standard and/or electronic) -- Development Funds. We need dough to pay for rehearsal space, purchase equipment, keep our clunker cars running, tour, rent studio recording time, and most importantly, arrange to set up camp and play at Burning Man. WHAT YOU GET IN RETURN By giving us a donation, you become a non-performing member of DALAI LAMA DING DONG, and get to share in the experience of us rehearsing, performing, recording, touring. Blah blah. HOW TO CONTACT US: If you're willing to contribute, please contact Karma (Mark) at 415-621-4274, or e-mail karmakazikid@yahoo.com Bless you all! -- Karma, November 25, 1997 at 11:57p

That guy on Jeproady ![tm] was me . My first 2 [out of three things for chat ] were : He controls who lives and who dies. Hail Hackett ! And, he works at a cardboard box factory by day, and dictates the tastes of Canada by night- Chris Hackett ! - but , for some reason, they had Alex [ a Canadian] focus on the BM thing. When it taped, It was only five days after leaving. I have the feeling he [Alex] was terminally confused by it. Still-- Burning Man on a game show ! I am sure there are alot of BM people who would do well there. Hopefully, others will not crash and burn like I did. Hackett -- Hackett, November 15, 1997 at 4:53a

ISO Puppet Theater video from BMan '97. I'm looking for videotape anyone might have (any format -- VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Fisher-Price) of the Laughing Scorpion Puppet Theater and Puppet Wall, our installation at Burning Man this year. This was the 4'x8' white and red puppet theater and 5'x100' black wall located southeast of the Man. Footage of any of the puppet shows would be great, but I'm also interested even if it's only of the installation itself. This is for possible inclusion in one of the Burning Man '97 videos now in production. Please email me with any relevant info (perhaps you don't have any footage yourself, but know someone who does. . .). Thanks. <http://www.zoka.com/laughing> -- Michael Z., November 14, 1997 at 1:18a

I want to find out about Burning Man. I was watching a TV special on the event and I feel in love with the entire concept. I am an 18 year old artist and would like to participate next year, any info from anyone would be greatly appriciated. I would like to also meet some people who have participated or will be participating in this great celebration. -- Lauren, November 2, 1997 at 8:56p

Got pics... geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/3386 -- One of the Heroes of Fandango, October 30, 1997 at 2:09p

Just another media mention (though an unlikely one). On an episode of "Jeopardy" last week, during the lame conversation section, Alex quizzed the dread-locked guy about his summer vacation- Chris responded he was in the desert north of Reno at Burning Man, and proceeded to describe it as a temporary city where elaborate structures are raised, then burnt to the ground. Alex put on his wary of weirdos face and asked whether photos were taken. Chris was doing very well, a shame he crashed and burned on the final.... -- Smegmakovitch, October 29, 1997 at 5:12a

I know it's unlikely, but if the short girl at the Goa "rave" Monday morning in the black and white full-length dress and shoulder-length dark hair reads this, please e-mail me. I didn't want to ruin your vibe by approaching you while you were dancing but I'd really like to talk to you sometime. -- Hugh, October 26, 1997 at 7:49p

Did anyone else from Virginia attend Burning Man 1997? We were the guys with gold camel that skirted water. We were British Archeologists. Seeing that Man Burn was the most exciting thing I've seen in a long time. I enjoyed hanging out and dancing with the drummers and percussionists. They kept the Beat going for hours after the Man Burned. TO the guys from the Fandango Camp with the flame throwing Vegematic, that was the most awsome thing I saw at Burning Man. It is too bad they didn't let you torch the non-stop TechnoDance/Trance Machine. But I guess someone would have seriously burned. You got beat by the Big Ice Ball Though !!! THE ICE WON!!!! Next year you need to install a car motor show you can drive that around to the various camps. What a pagan pyro festival!!!! I will never be the same again!!! Well anyway, please email me with your comments and see you next year. GABBA GABBA HEY -- Epes McMurran, October 22, 1997 at 10:09p

Does anyone have photos of any of any of the parties at BM this year? I'm writing a piece for DJ magazine in the UK and desperately need some good slides or prints to borrow or pay for. I'm especially interested in any of the Goa-style parties on the playa that went on until sunrise and beyond – particularly on the final night when Goa Gil played. Please repsonse asap. Thanks in advance. -- Jason Brookes, October 20, 1997 at 1:48p

Hey "JILL", I'm saddened to see that "you" are so threatened by someone with such a positive outlook. I look forward to meeting Shona next year and giving him/her (and everyone else who is still helping with the project) a big hug. I think the "MALL" is open Jill, why don't you go there, where you belong. You'll be much more at home there. PART 18 P double s, Alice in Wonderland and all of the Fire Circle; I’m drummin’ and thinking of all of you, every day. I love you all very much. Shona -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:33p

PART 17 Will they always take a literal swing at you? No. Metaphorically however, they will always take a swing at you. I’ll tell you this from my own experience of being witch-hunted over the years as a free thinking freak. "Step in and act", embrace your fear with joy and love, laugh joyfully as they lead you to your persecution, for you are truly and forever "free", and as all things are, you are on your way to somewhere. Much luv, and I'll see you 'out there' . . . Shona -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:10p

PART 16 The reason I’m telling you this is to bring to light an otherwise obvious point (this isn’t the first time that something like this has happened by the way, but I reeeealy like my Burning Man Sticker, so I keep it visibly posted on my window), for whatever reason, there will always be those that fear, are threatened by, or are otherwise upset that people like us exist in this world. They choose not to understand that we "feel the Earthbeat", that we have a need to be free and a need to express ourselves in our own way, to be a part of something much much more than what commercial society has prescribed and administered to our parents, ourselves and our children. They will always try to stifle our creativity, our enthusiasm regarding spirit and love, and our general opposition to the current norm of "buy this and be happy". -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:09p

PART 15 (So I don't recall Roman, so what) This is an interesting note of interest. On the way back I pulled into a gas station and there was this guy there. He didn’t know that it was my Jeep that he saw a Burning Man sticker in the window on and so he comes into where the cash register is as I am paying for my gas. He says, "That yer’ Jeep out there?" I replied, "Why yes, yes it is indeed my Jeep out there". He says "So, you one o’ dem weirdo’ freaky satanist fuckers from da’ deeeeeesert"? I replied "No, just a regular freak". He says "Alright Mr. Smartass, you got a beef wit’ me, you want sum'!!"? I replied "What is your preoccupation with my ass being smart or not, by the way"? (That was when he got reeeealy angry). Well, needless to say, he didn’t take to kindly to my questioning of his obvious masculinity and tried to hit me. It was kind of fun for a second and then I remembered that I was having dinner with a friend at the Lake that night so I exited stage right. It’s okay, he didn’t get hurt, except maybe his ego. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:09p

PART XIIII Also, here’s a reminder to any and all skilled workers out there. If you visit the site, give something back, ask the land owners what you can do to lend a hand, maybe take a rake with you and trek out to find some left ashes that need raking or packing out. As always, send good vibes out to the Playa, the whole land and the whole planet and beyond, and most of all, to yourself and those you love. It makes a difference. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:06p

PART XIII On the other hand, Joy the Astrogirl has a great slant on this. Burning Man should be new every year. Burning Man is nomadic, Burning Man site structures should all disappear after each event so that each year has it’s own vibe, it’s own space. I think Astrogirl is right on. So I could go either way regarding the Bone Arch. The consensus this past weekend was that it should be left. I’m alright with that. Ultimately, I think, Mother Nature and Mother Earth will tell us what the best course of action should be. I’ll check on it every time I’m at the site and I’ll do what my heart tells me to do, re-tie a bone here and there, or if the whole thing just gets blown/washed/eaten away over time, I’ll do what I can to clean it up. I’ll just see how it goes and go with that. It’s not my decision anyway. It’s a decision that all of us make together. Send your vibe, let’s see what happens. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:05p

PART XII As for the Bone Arch., here’s my very personal take on this beautiful work of art. The giant wind storm last week has cordially molded the bone arch into a "flacid" state (check out the picture, you’ll get it). The interesting thing is however, that if you didn’t know what it looked like before the flacidness, then I think you’d still look at it and say "Yowza, that’s pretty nifty". Even if you were able to know it "pre-flacidia", I think you’d still think it’s !!dynomite!! (Jimmy Rogers impression). So, if it was left there, it’d still be this beautiful thing,. I look forward to touching it and admiring it everytime I trek out to the site. It’s like it’s saying "Hi, I missed you". -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 6:04p

PART XI Everyone wants to know about the Bone Arch and about Pepes Tower. Well, here’s the scoop. Pepes tower, as many of you know, was not entirely burned during Ishtar. It’s remnants still remain far out on the site. It seems to have assimilated itself "into" the Playa surface and resembles an "outgrowing" , birthing, reaching for the sun, semi-organic, "thing" that in a certain perspective seems to have "emerged" from the Playa. Will it remain? There is word that it’s structure will be salvaged and/or hauled out. We’ll see how it goes. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:57p

PART X So what’s left to do on the Playa? Well, throughout the year, some of us have committed to making regular "non-intrusive" treks out to the site and taking out hefty bags and rakes and doing what we can to be very certain that it is returned as closely as possible to zero impact. Some great souls are still out there at this very moment, Some of us will return every couple of weeks. The roads through camp are beginning to regrow their brush and much of the wildlife is returning as well. The Aspen groves in the hills above the site are just beginning to turn golden, It’s an incredible thing to see. There are still some fire pits on the grassy areas of the site that need to be safely moved away from the brush. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:56p

PART VIIII My thought on this moment is this. Maybe I was extra joyous at the moment because I had just outright "absorbed it" and was now in a continual state of bliss, or maybe it just decided that it was done with me and it found its way back to the Playa surface. Well, if I absorbed it, then I think that’s pretty neat, I’ll always carry it in my heart nonetheless. If, however, it decided to return to the Playa, then I think that this is good also. It will fall into someone elses lap some Twilight morning and then they too will be in a state of super bliss. PART VIII Well, it was a great few days on the Playa. We accomplished so very much. On an earlier trip out, A little hologram smily face necklace found me and I had been wearing it ever since. It has brought me so much joy. Somewhere between the pedal camp teardown and lunch, I reached inside my shirt to show it to TeePee Dan, and I discovered that it was gone. For a brief moment, I was sad. But then I remembered how it came into my life in the first place. I was sitting at "the tree" one early morning at Twilight, and the wind blew through the branches and it just fell into my lap. I thought "grooovay!!!" It was icing on the cake of a wonderful sunrise at the Playa. Like I said, I had been wearing it ever since that morning (a few weeks). TeePee Dan and I were stacking metal panels from pedal camp and he was telling/relaying to me some of his memories from when he attended the original Woodstock. I was extra happy at the moment and wanted to show him the hologram happy face necklace around my neck. Well, like I said, when I reached down for it, it was no longer there. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:55p

PART VII Fred with the Incredible Does Anything Goes Anywhere Gets the Job Done Super Truck, you did the work of twelve people everywhere and at every moment. "This Woman" (Amii), thank you for your energy. I love you all, I thank you all from my heart. You did it! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Special Mucho Bueno thanks to Flash, to Sunny and to Dan. Flash has a great vibe that makes anyone have fun and is the most incredible cook. He made us all a great dinner Sunday night. It was so yummy. Sunny and Dan, your poetic rhythm, your incredible charm, envelops me. I miss you both, I’ll see you at Ananda. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:47p

PART VI Will and Crimson, thank you for everything.. Not just for this weekend, but for working throughout the entire year so that we might all call the Playa our home. You did so much ‘behind the scenes’, and you’re still out there getting things ready for next year. On behalf of everyone who has ever enjoyed the planning of the city layout, the driving across a graded road out there, who found there way because of all of the markers and tags and road signs, thank you. You did so much to help create this wonderful Black Rock City that so many of us call home. TeePee Dan, your vision moves me man, Chuck from Reno, you’re limitless energy inspired us all , the three guys in the blue Jeep from Reno who stacked and took care of the house of doors, thanks. Jim and Joanna, Dan from Oregon and Flynn with the super fetch puppy, thanks for picking up the ice ball structures and for all of the other many ways you contributed. The crew from the city : Pony Boy Girl Toolshed and Jeff, doing whatever need doing, picking up a million bottle caps and shiny pieces of string. Paul the Apostle a.k.a. Cyber Satan and AbCynthia eagle eye roamers of the Playa and providers of Starburst, lip balm and general great spirit, "Super Jules" the incredible grit cookin’ Texan and all around wonderful soul, you are wonderful company, I miss you. Richard and Mary the Mermaid going around helping everywhere. Walt & Kimberly, again, thanks for making the trek to the site and contributing so positively. Fred with the Incredible Does Anything Goes An -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:45p

PART IV A short but powerful storm came to the Playa Friday afternoon and made for very soggy and chilly working conditions Friday night and through most of the day Saturday. Everyone carried a few pounds of mud on their shoes, in addition to carrying countless pieces of lumber, metal, and unmentionables throughout the day. The spirit never diminished, everyone was alive. As tired and caloused and wet and wind blown and muddy and thirsty and hungry and muscle cramped as everyone was (at one time or another), the spirit never diminished!! The small group of people out there this past weekend represented everything that’s "good" in all of us. They are an incredible bunch. For every bottle cap they picked up, a mountain was moved. For every pile of debris they cleared, the land expanded. For every kind smile that was shared, for every helping hand that was offered, love and community manifested. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:42p

PART III I won’t address the issue of who didn’t show up this weekend, It’s a pointless discussion to dwell on coulda’ shouldas’. That’s all I’ll say about that. Instead, and generally, let’s talk about who ‘did’ show up, and what ‘was’ accomplished. Here’s the skinny as I lived it : PEDAL CAMP : DECONSTRUCTED / CENTRAL CAMP STRUCTURES : DECONSTRUCTED / HOUSE OF DOORS : DECONSTRUCTED / ICE SCULPTURE FRAMEWORK : DECONSTRUCTED. ALL SALVAGEABLE METAL / WOOD / PLASTICS : STACKED AND HAULED OUT OR WAITING TO BE HAULED OUT. ALL "HEALTH DEPARTMENT" CONCERNS (ROTTING AND INFESTED TRASH) : CLEARED <<DUMPSTERS STILL NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM PROPERTY>>. MISCELLANEOUS GARBAGE THROUGHOUT THE PLAYA : needs another once over due to wind blowing but for the most part done. Incredible amounts of work were accomplished this past weekend. There wasn’t a soul out there that didn’t do the work of ten people. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:42p

PART II There doesn’t seem to be more than a few pertinent questions in our lives; who am I, where am I, what am I doing at this moment? How do I feel about what is going on around me? Where do I want it to go from here? These seem to be a few of the questions we all share. Individually, our answers to such questions seem to change over and over again, through time, but ultimately, our answers are all threads of a common fabric. We find ourselves ‘together’, at the end. We are all related, we are all connected; "Mitakuye Oyasin". For me, personally, this is a very small part of what Burning Man is about, and the rest, as we all know, just simply can’t, and shouldn’t, be put into words. -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:41p

PART I :::"Un"Official Playa Cleanup Update::: Tuesday 14 October 1997 !!If it isn’t your birthday today . . ."Happy UnBirthday"!! First of all, let me say something regarding some of the recent negativity on this Bulletin Board…!!ENOUGH!! We’ve got work to do. Let’s discuss our common goals and work out a plan to achieve them. I have a few questions for everyone : "Can you imagine the incredible possibilities of our working together?" "Will you be so bold as to be a part of such an expansive and blissful ideal?" Imagine such a world, imagine such a community, imagine yourself as an integral part of such an idea. Is it hard work? You bet it’s hard work! Is it worth the effort? Look around you, look inside of yourself, see what causes uncontrollable joy in your heart, look around again, look inside of you again, see what causes sadness and pain in your heart Answer the question for yourself. Is it worth the effort? Only you know the answer. Think about it again; what is our shared vision? What is our shared experience? -- Shona, October 14, 1997 at 5:39p

Sad to hear about the amount of litter and heavy refuse left out on the playa. None of us deserve another "Burn" if these societal ills can't be corrected. If you can't party and be responsible for your actions, then stay home. Go to a mall where you belong. I don't want to camp with you shits again. Our "Kill Your Television" burn was nice and clean. We had every cinder swept into one hefty bag by noon the next day. It only took us an hour, so we filled another bag with bottles and cans in the perimeter of our sight and the main stage. So simple! We were so happy to take it with us. It made us feel good. And, it was way less to haul than what we came with. I seriously question whether we can make the whole project work on this scale, anywhere. County politics aside, I do beleive we fucked ourselves. Sad, Sad, Sad! -- tripper, October 13, 1997 at 11:23a

Hello all who still frequent this page. Share with me my memories of Burningman 97. http://members.aol.com/legionenfx -- Dark Angel, October 10, 1997 at 0:50p

Front page of the Reno Gazette-Journal today: "Burning Man legacy litters desert" The Burning Man Festival made a mess at the edge of the Black Rock Desert, and if the garbage isn't removed quickly, the controversial Woodstock-style event won't be welcome next year. The angry ranch manager who allowed the Labor Day party on her land wants the litter cleared this weekend, and Washoe County is threatening criminal action if the refuse isn't picked up by Oct. 24. "Where are the little piggies that left the [trash]?" asked Fly Ranch operator Anne Westerbeke, who is also suing Burning Man organizers for failure to pay for use of the property. "They should come back." The art-and-entertainment event, which attracted about 10,000 people - many of the naked - took place Aug. 27 to Sept. 1 and culminated with the burning of a 40-foot wooden statue of a man. Westerbeke fears that the trash won't be removed before fall rains turn the desert to mud, preventing trucks and other vehicles from being driven around the festival site. "It's kind of a race against nature with the storms coming in," said Westerbeke, who has picked up festival garbage on her own. "It's really a tragedy, the garbage situation out there." Organizers say a clean-up effort is planned Saturday and Sunday. If the trash isn't hauled away, Westerbeke won't allow another Burning Man event on the ranch 17 miles northwest of Gerlach. "The answer is 'no'" Westerbeke said. "If they can't even clean up after themselves and get their site fee paid, the answer is 'no'. What's fair is fair." The festival's San Francisco Bay area-based organizers say the trash includes remains of sculpters and other art work burned during the festival. They also say Westerbeke will get paid. "We should finish [cleaning up] this weekend," Burning Man comptroller Will Roger said. "All the actual garbage is cleaned up. There are just some structures left." The Washoe District Health Department, which is hold Westerbeke responsible for trash pickup as the property manager, sent warning letters late last month to the Fly Ranch and Burning Man. Westerbeke could be fined up to $1,000 if the garbage isn't removed. "We have several options," health department environmentalist supervisor Jeanne Rucker said. "One is to see if they have made any progress. If they have, we can work with them until they get it cleaned up. The other is to issue a criminal citation." Trash is just one of Burning Man's problems. Another difficulty is money. Burning Man owes Westerbeke about $20,000 under and agreement to pay her $2 per person attending the event. That's part of about $100,000 festival organizers said they owe creditors when the event ended. Washoe County kept $246,865.17 in Burning Man gate receipts to pay for fire protection, law enforcement, sanitation, and other services at the event. The county, which impounded festival ticket sales to make sure its costs were covered, returned $55,898 to Burning Man. That's not enough to pay all creditors, and Roger said Burning Man will conduct fund-raisers to make up the difference. Washoe County Commissioner Jim Shaw said this year's difficulties would be considered if Burning Man tries to stage a 1998 festival in the northern Nevada desert. "I don't know if the county wants to do this again or not," Shaw said. "I would demand they have some up-front money. When you come in with your request for a permit, make sure you have a couple hundred thousand dollars to go along with it." Burning Man organizers had blamed their money problems on the county, which imposed more than 100 health and safety requirements on the festival when it granted construction and business permits for the event. Festival officials said the cash crunch hampered clean-up efforts. Burning Man, which has taken place in northern Nevada for seven years, moved from Pershing County to Washoe County after 1996. The festival had failed to pay a $23,000 site fee to the federal government on time. Washoe County Commissioner Jim Galloway wouldn't rule out Burning Man obtaining another festival permit. "That's provided we still have reason to believe our conditions can and will be met and we will be able to collect our full costs for service," Galloway said. "I'm sorry to see this cleanup delayed because that's part of the last-minute approach we don't want to see at a future event." -- Purple Princess, October 10, 1997 at 10:24a

Myself and 2 friends plan to spend this weekend (Oct 11th/12th) at the site, helping with the cleanup. I wrote to will at firedanzz@earthlink.net, but never heard back. I don't suppose we'll be turned away, so we're going to show up anyway. -- craig, October 10, 1997 at 7:49a

I heard about Burning just barely too late to participate - b.m. '98 is on my list! I see/sense a lot of positive energy here in this b.m. community. If there are any burningfolk reading this who are geographically in the Upper Midwest USA (IA-IL-MN-WI), please include me in any mailings re: regional festivals. I am a very participatory kinda guy & have organized a number of (smaller) ephemeral tent cities in my time. I am currently Exiled from the Tribe in outback rural Iowa, so if you have *any* inclination to email me and actually stimulate my mind, by all means plz. DO! blessed be! e! -- entguy, October 8, 1997 at 10:53a

Did anyone take pics of me? I was the dude dressed as a Postal Worker riding a small chromed bike. I will trade a uncirculated 1996 Buring Man stamp (stamp was destroyed in the '97 burn) on a postcard of myself & my car in exchange of a good pic of me & bike. -- Postman Of The Playa, October 4, 1997 at 9:34a

GARBAGE THEATER CAMP and Scavenger Store - Burning Man 1998 Burning Man has always had an issue with cleaning up a mess left behind. A clear lesson of our experiment is that we humans create and leave a lot of "packaging" in our wake. Lets bring some light to our dark nature of wastefulness. Garbage Camp will be thematic and of course heavily ritualistic. A theater of dumpsters (recycling included) overseen by monks/MCs robed in thrown away items. What price shall people pay to cleanse themselves of their refuse burden? The more they have the greater the price! (humility is the cleanser of the soul). Drop me a post if you want to help or have any suggestions. Dan Miller <burnman@flash.net> -- burnman@flash.net, October 3, 1997 at 9:11a

P double S, Do you have any skills regarding Solar Panels/Solar Power for the ranch, i.e., installation, where to get them, etc.? That would be great too. See you out there. -- Shona, October 2, 1997 at 3:06p

::ATTENTION ALL:: Do you have experience in roofing, plumbing, electrical wiring, or general carpentry??? Then your help and knowledge sure could be put to use at the event site anytime, especially during the volunteer cleanup effort the weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th. (Oct) There is much work to be done at Annie & Vans ranch (they are the wonderful people who allowed us to set up Black Rock City on the Playa). Repairs, helping with construction on the ranch, hauling out left items, carpentry of all sorts are needed. Arrange supplies with Annie and Van "before" you head out. Donate some of your skills to these wonderful people; pound a few nails, help install a door, insulate something, hang some siding, ask "how can I help"? Someone who could have a creative idea or two regarding "communications" for the ranch would be great (any mobile communication speacialists out there?). Hope to see you out there. P.S. have an extra 1/4 or 1/2 chord of good firewood that you don't need? They could use it for the Winter (theirs was 'borrowed' during the event). A lot is being done at the ranch, but "more able bodies" would help to speed things up a bit. Hope to see you out there. Much, much love. -- Shona, October 2, 1997 at 2:40p

::last post continued:: from the site. Some structures will, and should, be left alone. The bone arch still stands and is a beautiful piece of art. Please leave it alone (my personal opinion). So there is deconstruction to be done, as well as alot of hauling to the conveniently located dumpsters on the site. That means that "flatbeds" and "trucks" are mucho bueno items that will greatly help the cleanup effort. Also, it rained heavy the last couple of days, so keep that in mind if you plan on treking "out" on the Playa. Also, it is a little colder during the night time now, so if you camp, bring warm stuff to beat the chill. The weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th, your help is needed. Whatever you can contribute, time, encouragement, even a positive vibe from wherever you are, it would mean so much. Please help to "fully" restore the event site to its' amazing and wonderous beauty. And when you get out there, if you happen to run into Annie or Van, just say to them "thank you" for being such generous hosts, thank you for everything. ((and, if you can, bring them some good firewood for the Winter too, since theirs was 'borrowed' during the event, I'm sure they would appreciate it very much)). Hope to see you all out on the Playa the weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th for the cleanup effort. Much, much, much love. -- Shona, October 2, 1997 at 2:14p

:: Site Cleanup Update :: Speacial thanks to everyone who participated in the volunteer cleanup effort last weekend (26th, 27th & 28th). You got so much done. Bob, Sharon, JoeMe, Stephanie and Aaron from the City and Santa Cruz, Garth from Reno, Don, Sunny & Littlefeet from Nevada City (hope to run into you this weekend at Ananda), Kim & Walt from Heaven, thank you so very much for everything you did. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!!! Also, thanks to "Flash" for caretaking of the Playa, he may never see this post but thanks, nonetheless. All of you, for every bit of picking up this or that, helping out at Annie and Vans' ranch, and just generally giving so generously of your time and sweat. It is so very appreciated. So where do we stand now in terms of the site cleanup? Well, opinions differ, but my take on it is this : A great deal has been accomplished in the month since the event, but there "still" remains much to be done. Can it be done? You bet! As a matter of fact there is a plan to get "everyone" out there the weekend of the 10th, 11th & 12th. What is left to do? Most of the labour of love "on the event site" revolves around PEDAL CAMP (pun intended). Nearly all of pedal camp was left (trash included). So there is messy cleanup work (hauling to the dumpsters) as well as deconstruction work, involving more hauling of unsalvageable wood to the dumpster and the stacking of any "salvageable" wood in a pile so that those who can use it may haul it away -- Shona, October 2, 1997 at 2:09p

ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT! ANNOUNCEMENT! On behalf of Larry, I am proud to announce that an anonymous donor from the state of California has just agreed to donate $125,000 to Burning Man. These desperately needed funds will go to pay off outstanding debts and insure that Burning Man will exist for years to come. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the effort. It has been your help that has made it possible to climb out of this giant hole. With this gift of $125,000, one man/woman served to insure that thousands more will learn and grow from the unique experience in the desert -- an experience we call "Burning Man." -- Elisabeth Harvey, September 25, 1997 at 8:16a

Ultra super-duper thanks to everyone who made it to the FIRST (and not last!) L. A. burners gathering! Special thanks also to Danger Ranger, who flew all the way down from S.F. to enlighten us with his presence! Just to let you know -- we collected over $1,000, and we weren't even trying that hard. Thanks for recharging my battery -- and my friends who didn't go to Burning Man and are sick of hearing me talk about it incessantly thank you as well, for giving me an evening's outlet. It was great meeting all of you, I'm so glad we had such a high and enthusiastic turnout. Wasn't Nova Express cool? I came to Burning Man from south Florida with the feeling that my life may be transformed there. My expectations were met beyond my wildest dreams. This was truly the happiest time of my life. I walked around Saturday night with all my new friends thinking to myself that this was truly the most sane, alive, and connected to people I'd ever felt. Speaking of... all my love to Rodney, Chanel, and Eric in Reno and Chris and Deb in San Fran. I feel like I've known you all for years. And to Larry Harvey, thank you so much for having the vision and courage to make this event possible. You must be incredibly proud. You are helping to raise the level of intelligence, creativity, and love in thousands of people. I burned obstacles imprisoning my mind Sunday night that had tortured me for years. All my love to those who made it possible! P.S. If you live in Florida, drop me a line. Maybe we can organize a local BM fund raising party. -- Steve Velazquez, September 22, 1997 at 0:10a

Note: I love this damn place... Note: I want this to happen again! Note: Send in your money now! Note: I would like to find pictures or video of the female fire-dancer that performed after the burn in front of the stage in central camp... Note: Let the Man Burn Again -- Joshua!, September 21, 1997 at 3:27p

I just got a call from my brother David. Wow, this last event kicked off on my birthday. I am so sorry I didn't know about BM before this. I left my name and contact information on the hotline. I may be relocating from Dallas to either San Jose or Santa Barbara at the end of the year. I have a very eclectic background and I hope I can contribute to the BM milieu. -- Sarah Lyon, September 21, 1997 at 0:24p

THANK YOU all !! You made my BM experience a life-altering awaking. I've started finding my answers. I owe the rest of my life to all of you and to the Burning Man. Burn it everyday, keep the fire alive and enternal. -- gga (Great Grape Ape), September 19, 1997 at 10:20p

Looking for anyone with pictures of the Flamethrowing "Vegematic." I followed it around all night and thought it was absolutely beautiful I but didn't have my camera on me. -- DA, September 19, 1997 at 5:47p

Althouugh I was prevented from attending, your site has enabled me to understand what has transpired to some degree. We live in a time where people are forever being divided and your concept of community is essential if we are to retain our collective humanity. I feel very much connected to this experience as I am working with others to create a full time community with similar conditions to the ones which you are defining, and I am watching your experiments with an eye to recreate them. I believe that space is one of the crucial elements in defining social interaction, and our embryonic entity seeks to utilize some of the underappreciated areas of our nation. I would love to see events like yours blossom on a regional basis, I think the communication tools and the will are already present. All that needs to be added is the connectivity between individuals necessary to coordinate it. If such a scenario works, It could be possible to keep the spirit of your event circulating eternally, and I think any being with love and community in teir heart would want that. Feel free to write back, I am always willing to talk and to plan. Also please keep me informed of possible way one might utiliize to help your group sincerely, Erich Tompkins -- Erich Tompkins, September 19, 1997 at 3:20p

"Yearbook 97" Publish a yearbook using 97 photo's and stories only. All proceeds go back to the BM project. This book will be publish just like a high school yearbook. This is to be our book with our pictures and stories of BM 97 only. Please give me feedback, thoughs, ideas ect... I promise nothing, until I get more feedback from the comminity. -- Project "yearbook 97", September 19, 1997 at 1:15p

I had a fabulous time Saturday riding across the desert with Che the Space Cowboy atop his beautiful horse-and-tractor-like mobile...we were both wearing cowboy hats and he was decked out in the most extreme and tasteful display of silver flares and boots, a tight red shirt...I was wearing some purple hot pants and Docs...if you took a photo of us and want to share it with me, I'd be glad; I know you all took shots 'cause we were out ridin' a long time! -- Jennifer Dowling (Jennifer D. on Ave. B.), September 19, 1997 at 5:51a

Everywhere I turned at BM '97 there was an EXPLOSION OF CREATIVE GENIUS!! Larry Harvey - THANK YOU for this opportunity to experience, explore, create, innovate, and most importantly, to BE. As a resident of Washoe County, I want to say that I am sickened by the reaction of the county. I SINCERELY hope that their bullshit politics don't run you out of Nevada. They don't realize the gem you've brought us. Then again, GENIUS is seldom understood. One more word: TRASH. If you can't take out what you brought in, DON'T COME, because you are obvisiously missing the point. There's some great people & silhouette shots on my Burning Man page: http://www.laboroflove.com/burning.html Ciao! -- Purple Princess, September 15, 1997 at 8:34p

You, know, it seems *so* silly for some of us to use the word "artist" to describe/compartmentalize ourselves - especially out there on the playa. It's a word that seems to work very well everywhere else (outside of Burning time) but, everytime I hear the word I find myself scoffing/chuckeling (is that two 'l's?). When one says that they are an 'artist' the word automatically sets up a mild polarity which seems to imply that only the user has the gift of sight and/or vision and that others somehow don't..... -- B'etor, September 15, 1997 at 8:18a

Hey! I just wanted to announce that my new web site about Burning Man is up! My (second) favorite line of the burn: ...So I'm standing just off stage for Jenerik's set Sun nite, center o' town after the burn, rite? Stoned outta my witts and drunk as a skunk, but sober as a judge, right, cause I decided not to take the mushrooms I had scored earlier from that guy with the tattoo on his jugular, right? ("I'm righteous, seen?" -- he was!) anywyay I'm standin' there trippin out to Scott's boss set, but sober right? and this yuppie comes up to me and sez: "Hey know where I can cop some mushrooms?" and at that instink I realize that there's a Washout County Sheriff in full regalia off in the shadows what wasn't there before. "No," I said, "I don't. This is a pretty straight crowd. Maybe a coupla beers..." -- Clothes Call, September 14, 1997 at 1:28a

I'm looking for the band Beyond Race's site so I can order a cd or two--any info would be appreciated. peace, X -- phil keeley, September 13, 1997 at 8:58a

The intensity of this thing was indescribable, I have one question: was the guy on top of the '73 satellite death car one of the former members of the group "Information Society"? he was tripping me out...especially when he said "If you're whit you need to take off all your clothes...You are the oppressor!!".....at that point I looked around and did a (cultural inventory) and later thought to myself: WHAT IF THE NAACP FINDS OUT ABOUT THIS..THIS WHOLE FUCKER COULD BE CONSTRUED AS SOME SORT OF RITUAL KKK ZIPPO FEST....and that could present a danger to the equality of attendance for next year...I personally like looking at nude multicultural men, so I WOULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS HERE....besides, we were pretty close to Idaho. Another thing...(color me paranoid) what about the constant police maneuvers, I have suspicions that sucha a large force in this desolated area, close to Idaho must be seizing our funds in a corrupt (but successful) bid to fund their paramilitary exercises no doubt benefitting the local militias whose members (including Kirkland) could all be part of some huge underground movement just waiting, amassing wealth, waiting for the right time to round us all up, hell perhaps surround the whole city of SF during some martial law crisis....HI MOM! -- gonna make it, September 13, 1997 at 0:57a

Our response to the media was the "KILL YOUR TELEVISION" performance. Thanks to the many patient folks who stuck around to enjoy our bit of intellectually compelling slapstick. Now, we reveal our hypocritical side. Did anyone happen to get us on video? Or, would some of the film crews that were present like to send us some footage so we can watch it on our television?! I'm unwired for a few weeks, so you'll have to phone me at (503) 524-7602. As for those who have such a bug up the ass about cameras of any sort at Burning Man. Find a creative way to enlighten these people, without such a harsh attitude. "Play to" the camera in the spirit of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. Give 'em what they want, and then some, until they just feel absolutely silly trying to capture it all. Let's also remember that there are people doing some very artful imagery with the photos that come away from Black Rock City. My only bitch this year is with the littering pigs that left their ciggy butts, bottle caps, bottles, and cans all over this beautiful and fragile environment. Drink in your camp and then go play. Don't bring these societal ills with you to the playa. If you can't pocket your butts, must we really have to make it a non-smoking venue? Take responsibility, or suffer the consequences. Fuck you thrice and never return if you can't take responsibility for your actions. And shame on you dog owners who let your dogs suffer, and for the dog shit we stepped in. Same goes to the human excrement we stepped in about 200 feet out on the playa from the mainstage. No pooches next year! We leave ours at home, so can you. Thanks to all the rest of the good citizens and staff that made it worth the trip. On with the experiment! -- Trip Allen, September 12, 1997 at 2:19p

i can't believe some of the bitchy attitude and bitterness i am reading in people's responses here. good grief. not what i expected at all. take the rods out of your butts. seems like the kind of narrowminded exclusivity that doesn't help anyone, including yourself. who cares if the media is there? this was the biggest gathering of media whores i ever saw! we're artists, for chrissakes, what's the problem? it IS a media event. anyway, this was my first time, and i will return every year from now on. it was wild, wacky, outrageously creative, and even a little bit spooky. i'm sorry, but that ishtar ritual was calling up some mighty OLD ancient forces. very intense. and when the man burned that fire and the crowd energy was amazing. it was the thrill of being on the edge of total chaos. the solar/fire/phallic heat. Pan and panic. plus it was about the sexiest bunch of folks i think i ever laid eyes on. i love that there are no boundries or hangups about sex. a truly fiery revel. it was nice to see people living it up in their bodies. i guess my only question is how do i get more involved for next year? -- pixie, September 8, 1997 at 11:20p

Unbelievable event. The people were great. I've been touched by the sound of the drum and will never be the same again. Outrageous and I love it. Everyone was beautiful! First time there, and I did not know what to expect. I lost my drum beater after the burning, if anyone found it, drop my a line. I know it's a long shot, but somebody could've found it! Thanks. It happened. The MAN burned again. I AM reborn. (...I need a shower tho') };-> Please pardon the almost evangelistic fan-boy enthusiasm inherent. I just got back from the playa after all! It's just that i've something important to say... This so-called "event" is, of course, in actuality a MOVEMENT that could *still* save this planet (at least the humans). I know we must resist ALL labels, but bear with me. The plaintive question of whether there will be a Burning Man '98 is less important than the urgency underlying it. If Burning Man only needs money to survive WE can raise that! It seems this year inspired MANY despite all the naysayers and cynics. All we need is to focus *a little* and we can create a fund-raising event that would not only be FUN in it's own RITE, but also a realistic way to attract MONEY! Yes, those of us with precious little financial reserve will have to donote our talents and time to the project--but isn't that one of the things that makes Burning Man so great? We of Black Rock know the sheer joy of sharing and contibuting. Not because we are "great humanitarians", no, we just know IT'S FUN. The rewards are far greater than the efforts. What's the alternative? More TV? Lollapa-loser? Consumer culture? If you were new to Burning Man this year; did this EXPERIENCE change your life? You and i both know it did. The unspeakable, hilarious, and profound TRUTH is clear. We NEED this. If WE the citizens of Black Rock continue to share, communicate, entertain, and inspire each other we CAN raise money for Burning Man. this is too important, AND you know it. we're all the MAYOR of Black Rock City, let's start acting like it! E-mail me IF you know who you are! Prosecutors will be Violated! BURN THE MAN! prosecutors will be violated! BURN THE MAN! -- Les, is more., September 4, 1997 at 0:47a

Is it happening again next year? No word from the crew so far... It was the best time of my life. Thank you everyone. -- Andrew, September 3, 1997 at 4:20p

Oh shit. My second time and better then ever. I don't know about you, but I came back to "so how was it". Mostly from the people who swore in 96 that thay would be there 97, but wound up going surfing, or to Vegas or ???? I could only look at them and after a few moments of non articulation say, "there are no words strong enough to describe what the hell happened on the little playa the last few days". I would try to summarize it with "Mardigras on Mars, or Living in a Dali Painting, I don't know" and leave it at that. We had a theme camp this year called Scetch City which allowed us more interaction with the participants (and spectators). I'm 33 years old. I've been a lot of places and done a lot of things. This tops it, by a none comairable margin. This constant divouring stimulation is what I've been trying to get out of life since I was ass-high-to-a-dog. I've achieved that twice. B-Man 96 and 97. And hopefully every other one there after. Soon, when I travel the world as a film maker I can come close to this feeling during the B-Man off season, but for now I'll just live with the images that are stuck in my head and a big-ass smile on my face. In closing thank ya'll for playing in my dreams. love simon -- Simon, September 3, 1997 at 4:10p

All who came, won! Yea there was media, camp followers, "young boys" and the local authorities; they probably did not get it. For me it was refreshing, restive and a break "to reality" from the daily grind. The wonderment of BURNINGMAN and the people who gathered in his name was only surpassed by just being there on the playa. I drove north on 34 from the site, instead of following the pack going south and more was revieled to me as I rode the high desert. Next time directions for us coming from the north would be welcomed. Thankx for all the pieces of your minds. See you next time in '98. -- Chuck Edmundson, September 3, 1997 at 4:04p

I went to the burn in a mask so no one would recognize me. My security men were nekkid except for their AK47s. I have a suggestion for paying down the debt BM has left over. T-Shirts. How about printing a bunch of T-Shirts with no words but just the BM symbol and selling them and all the money goes to pay off the debt. I want my BM T-Shirt. -Bubba -- President Clinton, September 3, 1997 at 3:07p

Thanks, that was the best BM ever. Everyone was very polite this year and the Burn was wonderful. Could have done with out the cop chopper and an army of fire trucks with nothing to do. But I bet the firemen and woman were digging it. Thanks again, But me on the BM mail list please. -- Phil M, September 3, 1997 at 3:00p

It's too bad that many were so put off by the consumer/spectators. Yeah, they exist everywhere but Burningman is a community 'not of this world' where we have the opportunity to show em all a thing or two... and most of us did. I managed to find the most wonderful, friendly, creative, mindblowing people to hang with, share with, listen to, converse with, and enjoy... This was my 2nd year and I found this one to be just as good as last year's. The media hype scared me bd off by it. This year, thanks to Dan & Bridget, about 20 of us sat at a playa-front camp (in the Blue Light District) and watched the burn from afar... much more enjoyable. Thanks to everyone and see you next year! Lauren (from the cDc camp; home of free watermelon and Mr. T haircuts!) -- Lauren Fox, September 3, 1997 at 2:32p

I was somewhat skeptical before embarking on my first journey to B.M. A few years ago I went to Woodstock (part 2, of course) and was disenchanted by the corporate and self-serving structure of the ordeal. But my reservations about B.M. soon vanished. It was the closest I've ever experienced to a utopia. I can't count how many people offered me a drink of water, or food, or a lollipop. I've heard it described as an anarchistic party. This could be further from the truth. It is true that for a few days structure or boundaries of our routine life did not bind us. But all of us created a city, free of judgement, ego, and pretension. I stripped down completely naked and danced with fury. Not a moment was I self-conscious. For some that may not seem like a big deal being that it was common place this weekend. I was never able to let go. It wasn't just the open space that made my experience so profound. I needed more then just a weekend in the desert to unravel myself. Until I started to let go of all the masks of work and relationships did I grasp how tightly I was wrapped. Not only was it a land for self-expression, but a vehicle for self-expression. I want to thank you all for making my experience so memorable. See you guys next year!!! - Jim -- James Alario , September 3, 1997 at 0:19p

Thank the Goddess that Burning Man *is*. I met some of the most remarkable people, and a few truly exceptional ones that I will no doubt love for a lifetime. If any of you missed the Temple of Atomenent, (Not not mention our kewl stamp!) we will be back next year, en fource. No critical words, as they are so entirely unnecessary at such an event. All things evolve. I am glad that my lifetime saw such a beautiful gathering of the tribe. ~Madame from the Temple of Atonement~ -- Madame Elisandrya, September 3, 1997 at 11:34a

Great Burning Man. The popularity of the event is indeed strange, however, the sense of community this year was remarkable considering the events scope. The emphasis of procreation rather than pointless destruction this year really balanced things out. I didn't have much problem with the media nor with the "spectators". This was my second time, and I found it an incredible community. Burning Man is now the Freak/Underground trade show of the year. We did a lot of networking and met people we should have met a decade ago but never had the chance. I was very busy and involved with projects such as performing in my new musical project with Scot Jenerik, and putting together our live/work space the "Black Light District". We did not have ourselves on the map since we wanted to be underground even to the event. We were able to do whatever we wanted basically. I find BM now an experiment in community. We arrived the Saturday before the event, when there were about 100 people. We saw the community rise from the mud. Sat-Mon you got to know everyone. You didn't have to lock and it was really fun helping out with the initial setup. Tue. many camps were getting set up, but things were still confusing and chaotic. Wen was the first official day and there were several thousand people in camp, but still many open gaps. Thur got bigger, and by Friday we had a city. By Friday you could not visit the entire community and we started locking our stuff. There were a lot more Spectators. Saturday last year was a very scary/violent/negative day. Although Kal's Helco performance was unsurpassed, and dwarfed the Sunday burn, the crowd was nuts on Saturday '96. We just hid in our trailor basically while the Gates of Hell burned. In contrast this years Saturday was a great feasival. Sure there were a lot of camps I could care less about, like all the obnoxious little rave camps, but there were also real gems: the Woodpussy performance was completely briliant!!! Sunday was again a completely joyous event. I will also point out that there were not really THAT many rules. For example, we borrowed a flatbed truck and found a generator and PA, then announced a show via megaphone all over camp. We performed in Center Camp right after the burn. This was a completely underground show. The pirate radio station did invite us, but we did not have to ask permission or sign any papers...we just did it. We did it by joining in actively in a ad-hoc community. TCH'KUNG and our project combined for the performance. It was really nice. So in my experience BM was an amazing unsurpassed event. I was able to be creative in basically any way I liked so long as I wasn't harming anyone else. This is sorta what we used to mean by "Anarchy" back in the late 70s and early 80s. We formed an "anarchist collective" of sorts in our Black Light District. We performed random acts of kindess and such on people through the DaDaClub. We through together shows that helped define our community organically without any formal structure. I interacted very little with the official Media, and they did not interfere with me. The "normal" people also pretty much ignored us, but the people we wanted to reach were easy to find. We exuded a "hardcore" yet "Positive" influence this year, as did many other camps. It was awsome and it must continue. Also, I've never had much of a problem with "normal" people since I usually design my projects with an eye towards education, so even the stupid "show us your tits" frat boy types get an idea implanted in the back of their mind. It was amazing and you were silly to miss it, since you too define a substantial part of this community. -- Ethan (and Annabelle), September 3, 1997 at 9:05a

Seems like this this is the board for bitter ex-BMers. Hey, keep your negativity and cynicism at home next year. I get enough of that each day. LIFE IS CHANGE. Better yet, start your own festival in some forgotten corner of the world. I'll be there. We can use more Burning Mans. Yea I'm a newbie and soon I'll be a oldie. Peace and love to everyone who made my first BURN so special -- joseph, September 2, 1997 at 10:12p

My first Burning Man and it was wonderful. Met great new people and got to know the five people in my group a lot better. Attitude is indeed everything on the playa. I would like to apologize to all the bitter people who were at last year's Burning Man and apparently resented my presence this year. I caught some pretty serious flack! Why? Do you realize that of the 10,000 people from last year, you all only had to invite one person this year in order to double the number? Next year can I complain too? Did anyone find my camera? A cheap Kodak 35mm jobbie from a drugstore with a brand new roll of film in it. One last comment - would everyone please consider not using strobe lights in their 'art'? I have epilepsy and all the strobes made it very difficult to participate at night. Strobes don't really add any statement to your expressions, they're just cheap devices to hide poor execution. You can do better! Hey, how about a giant bug zapper next year? We are going to see what we can build... Looking forward to next year's Burning Man! -- CherylAnn, September 2, 1997 at 10:11p

Thanks Trixie and Denise. We all had a great time. Jim -- Jim Meyers, September 2, 1997 at 9:33p

you complaining people are as bad as any frat boy or police helicopter. nothing is RUINED. do you say Christmas(or whatever) is RUINED because of a death in the family or the loss of a job? everything in life CHANGES, unless it is dead. and what i experienced this weekend was NOT even close to dying. of course i noticed the changes at first too, but i DIDN'T see any huge MTV camp(though a joke would have been cool) so things were not that bad. there are a lot of crazy wonderful artist spirits out there and there always will be. LONG LIVE CRAZY WONDERFUL ARTIST SPIRITS! and quit complainin'.. just help make it happen again next year -- DOLLHEAD, September 2, 1997 at 8:11p

Self-selection is so beautiful... please write! To jog yer memory, I was the tall blond guy wearing the following t-shirts: "I'm so FUCKING ALTERNATIVE", "Interval Research Corporation", "screwball Daffy", "fireflies", and "Frank Zappa for president". Thanks! -- Craig Latta, September 2, 1997 at 8:06p

was surprised and fascinated by the phenomena of 20,000 plus people interacting with a minumum of rules.More people doesn't spoil the pudding, just makes it different. Was disappointed by the suburban zoning. Camp energy was unnaturally contained and shaped by the radial zoning. Street names? Town center? come on, decentered cities are much more interesting. Last year's 'seek your own distance and level' use of the playa was profoundly different. Burning man himself needs to be on the scale of the event as a whole, no? What about bamboo scaffolding 50 stories high? They do it in Hong Kong. concerned and still fascinated, david -- david, September 2, 1997 at 6:01p

Did you find my flashlight? It was a snakelight-type thing, black, two C size batteries, long bendable handle. Lost in on the playa Sunday. If you packed out your trash, bless you... if you left it behind, fuck you. Thanks for the memories. -- Linda (silver grass skirt!?!), September 2, 1997 at 5:46p

First time for me-definitely not the last, I hope. Like others, I thought it was too late to go to B.M. I was wrong. It was better than I had expected. Large groups of people often make me anxious: at B.M., I could not get enough human contact. Inspiring. Andrew and Jeff- Davis Eng. grads and Berkeley dwellers-wanted to get your #s so e-mail me if you want(SuzanQ@MSN.com) Eric the artist, thanks for the firm hand, hope I didn't create a monster of you. Much fun though. To those with negative things to say, I have a couple of comments. Ignore the media if they bother you. They should not have the power to ruin the spirit of the thing. And personally, I rather liked the helicopter- it was exciting in a way. More importantly, it feels good to flaunt to the media and to the authorities that people can come together to create something that in many ways totally defies the norms that our commercial culture uses to beat us into the ground. I am sypathetic to B.M. vets, but I believe that true community-building cannot exclude.(Paul!) Anyone who is cool with the rules and the spirit of the thing should be encouraged. I was really happy about the real lack of pretension there. I think the fundraiser is a great idea, and hopefully there will be more discussion of this topic. Thanks for the great time! -- Susan M., September 2, 1997 at 5:06p

Scott. We met after the man burned on Sunday. You with Gabriel’s friend Chiusee (?) and me with Nathan and others. You guys joined us for a while, visited our friends dance tent (too early) and stopped at another for drinks. Was hoping to run into you later but no luck. Hope to see you in SF. -- John, September 2, 1997 at 2:58p

I SAY COMMUNITY? TAZ? LETS REALLY DO IT AMERICAS READY FOR AN ART COLONY/VILLAGE THAT WILL GENERATE THE FORCE OF LIFE MONEY? SEEMS LIKE 20,000 PEOPLE @$75.00= 1.5 MILLION DOLLARS!!! THATS A SERIOUS WAD OF CASH "LETS" TAKE IT AND BUY LAND AND BUILD A REAL COMMUNITY! IMAGINE WHAT KIND OF ART WOULD BE HAPPENING IF THIS COULD GO ON ALL YEAR LONG ANYONE RESONATE? OR AM I ALONE? -- a toi puppyboy, September 2, 1997 at 2:26p

Thank you for returning me to my true self. At home in the heat, openly expressing ourselves, allowing the creative juices to flow ... I WANT MORE!!! THIS is what life is all about. Thank you to everyone who participated and even those who came to "spectate". I know that EVERYONE was touched in some way by the experience. We have all been changed and altered. May those memories guide us. I will be anxiously awaiting next year. Love to you all. -- Goddess, September 2, 1997 at 1:03p

Burning man has become the microcosm for society at large. This is an excellant opportunity to to sit back and take account of all the good and bad that exists around us, all over the world. If we can take the simple lessons that are learned here, within this eternal event perhaps there will be a chance that "...we will suvive" --->Burning man is the pill that will cure society's ills!--- -- Challan, September 2, 1997 at 11:20a

What an awsome experience that was! -- Nick Myerhoff, September 2, 1997 at 11:02a

I lost a large blue soft luggage bag full of clothes on Sunday morning when we went to the hot springs. I think it fell off the back of my pickup. The clothes in it were pretty stinky. Did anyone find it? -- Bill Banyai, September 2, 1997 at 10:54a

Once again, my heart takes me to a place where I NEED to be, and once again, I come too late. I look at these posts, and the experiences I had this weekend, and I can see what Burning Man is supposed to be, and I can feel it through all of my mind, body, and soul. Somehow, though, through all of the good vibes of the community that I needed to be a part of, it all felt tainted. The taint of the ever present media, and authorities just BROKE MY HEART. Ya know... I kept hearing people say that they were "Here to protect us from ourselves"... No.. they weren't. They were there to protect THE ASSHOLES WHO DIDN'T GET IT from themselves. The frat-boy mentality of some of the inhabitants really irked me. ALl they did was sit around all weekend drinking beer, and not contributing to the community at all. If they want to be consumers, they should STAY THE FUCK HOME! It just drives me insane, and I was in tears most of the trip home. It wasn't leaving Black Rock City that saddened me. IT was seeing all the people who didn't "get it" leaving bags of trash on the roadside, and hotrodding pickup trucks across the playa so they could get out of there, and escape their communal responsibilities, leaving their tracks where they went, instead of covering them. Good bye Black Rock City, I hope we meet again in some OTHER far away land... -- Smash Greywolf of the Black Swamp, September 2, 1997 at 9:43a

I dont want to be bitter. However if I never see a testorone high-gilled "frat" boy again, I wont be upset. I love BM, but how can you have a community that has the south side and the north side? Where were the railroad tracks and Molly Ringwald? 51 weeks. -- dirt girl, September 1, 1997 at 9:18p

Hello is anyone there? -- Uncle Joey, September 1, 1997 at 8:18p

I can't believe it. I've been to the Burning Man 4 years now and it has been ruined. Why? Why was this wonderful event of free spirit and peace demolished? This years camp site was horrible. The fact that we were being babysat by endless numbers of police including an ever circleing helicopter was ridiculous. I'm sad to see what this annual cleansing session has turned into. As the saying goes "all great things must come to an end" and it's truley unfortunate that this one did. Farewll Burning Man. I will not return. -- wet beaver, September 1, 1997 at 8:08p

Four years running. It's been nice. No, it's been fucking great! Thanks to *everyone* who has ever helped in any way in putting this together. However, things have changed - as all things do. Jet Ranger helicopters straffing the crowds with noise and light under the pretense of security at $1000+/hr - I didn't come to be babysat. Winnebagos accreting in safe, private circles like musk ox on the tundra, suburban white boys sportin' dreads and imbibing $50 bottles of scotch bang faux drums and laugh at those "faggot fucks" two tents down. Yeah, these guys are cool. Newly greased and oiled media clones slinking about looking for the perfect face to utter the perfect sound-bite so that the great Couch Zone of America can vicariously suckle on the energy of our frenzied hearts. Sanitizing and packaging an idea that will, ultimately, become more about money and numbers than spirit and communion. "The Center Cannot Hold..." and all that stuff. Still, hearts seeking isostacy have a way of finding that bouyancy amidst the riot of the horde. And that alone is enough. To be re-Minded. To re-Member...as it were.Ccertainly that's enough to give thanks for. Other playas and archetypal figures await to be burned. I'll see you there. -- Ray, September 1, 1997 at 7:09p

ust got back ye old B.M. Words can't describe how intense it was. The only negative thing I have to say about the whole thing is the cost of the speeding ticket I got on my way home. I think $160 is a bit steep for 85 mph in a 75 mph zone, don't you? TANYA, love, sorry I didn't say bye before we left. You were all asleep still. Hello again to the Australian living in S.F. on Haight, (I can't recall your name). Hope to see you again. To all that were there, I will see you next year... -- KENT, September 1, 1997 at 1:53p

Gawd I can't wait till BM!!! A few things here. First, the msg about the ILLUMINATIS CAMP sent by some one named Cory. If anyone took that one seriuosly. Fear not, it's not true at all, I know several people partisipating in that camp and have known them for years. If they are FBI agents, I'm a puprle pineapple with wings, And last time I checked, I wasn't purple at all, more like greenish blue. Seriously it's a product of someone with entirely too much free time on thier hands. Second I will have a 14' tramploine at the Man this year so feel free to drop by and bounce around and ask for David or Laura. We'd love to meet ya. We don't really know where were Gonna camp yet but it's hard to miss a 14' trampoline. Third, Does anyone know where I can get a big blue (just say N2O) tank filled in the Sacramento or SF Bay area? E-mail me if you have any comments or can help with the Tank Thingie Hope to see ya there. David Monroe -- David Monroe, August 24, 1997 at 4:32a

Hey folks, this message is not about stirring up up the pot, getting people excited and/or agitated. It is especially not intended to take the focus off of The Burning. I have heard (via second or third hand unsubstantiated account) that the Powers That Be in, I believe, Pershing Co., NV have yet to actually grant permission(s) for the Burn to take place. What these specific permissions are I'm not sure and I won't speculate. Further, I understand that an actual decision will not be made until later this week or, possibly, Monday or Tuesday. For some of us who have participated before at past Burnings, this event represents the closest that some of us will ever come to identifying with and practicing a religious ritual/ceremony. That the above situation may in fact be true and correct seems to me not only an affront of the highest magnitude but, if true, may well represent governmental interference in my guaranteed right to practice my religion as I deem approprite. Having said all of this I would ask all who have remotely similar sentiments to contact the Nevada office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Contact information is as follows:                                                                                                               Executive Director: Gary Peck                                                                                                               325 S. Third Street, Suite 25                                                                                                               Las Vegas, NV 89101                                                                                                               Phone: (702) 366-1226 If you feel up to it, call Gary and voice your concerns about this potential problem. Urge him to contact the appropriate state and federal authorities and suggest that he convey your concerns to them as well. -- The Five of Pentacles, August 20, 1997 at 11:01p

Don't be rediculous, you can see right through the man. The nerve gas is gonna be released by masked serfs around the outskirts of the crowd. They will also be shooting into the circle to take care of anyone situated upwind. I am serious about this. WARNING!!!!! It has come to my attention (over breakfast at a truckstop in Larado, TX) that a covert Brazilian group will infiltrate the Burning Man festival disguised as the Gerlach girls volleyball team. Their mission is to sell participants ice laced with a foreign compound which will render all those who consume it dumbfounded. On Sunday night when all have passed this ice between their lips the Brazilians will move into action in order to complete their mission. Their prime directive is to rescue the Man frpm our crazy pire. They will take him out on a large flatbed truck and whisk him to Reno. There an unmarked airplane equipted with yakima roof racks will carry the man southward leaving us all without climax. There is no way possible to alter this event as fortold by the prophets of the $1.95 two egg breakfast with toast, sausage, ham and bacon. -- Trucker Earl, Knower of Things , August 16, 1997 at 4:02a

WARNING ATTENDANTS OF BURNING MAN>READ THIS!!!!!!This is totally true. My Father is an FBI agent, working out of the SAn Francisco Office,# 134, investigations unit. The Feds will be setting up a fake camp, housed with younger agents made to look to fit in with the rest of the crowd. These are all younger new F.B.I. recruits. They will be taking information on people, possible busts,or follow ups on subversives and drug users. There camp will have a big RED PYRAMID, and they will call themselves the ILLUMINATIS CAMP.They think its a big joke, since the name ILLUMINATIS conjures conspiracy, and government cover up.Watch out for the Big Red Pyramid camp, Im not going because im 19 and my dad wont let me go.WATCH OUT.Ask them if their an undcover agent.I guess by Law they have to say yes.My friends are going and they know to warn everyone. So watch out.HOpefully the year after I will go, when this all blows over.Dont give drugs to anyone you dont know.I guess they are going to bust people on the last day.Legally they have no powers of arrest due to entrapment laws, but will intimidate you with lies if they catch you.Good luck.... -- Cory, August 16, 1997 at 2:26a

Nerve Gas Warning! Do Not Attend The Burning Man Gathering this Labor Day Weekend. Hey everyone! I've got some inside information about a suicide cult nerve gas event planned for the Burning Man gathering this month in Black Rock Desert, Nevada. I got into a conversation with some seriously freakish looking guys in a Montana truck stop. They were saying that the whole Burning Man project which started something like 12 years ago was founded by some subversives with mass murder in mind from the get go. I guess the number twelve has some numerological significance for them and they have been building the whole thing up into the big deal it has now become in order that they can put together the "critical mass" of particularly free spirited and high on acid individuals that, when asphyxiated with Sorin or some such toxin, will appropriately appease their deities. The whole "happy, temporary community, anarchy" thing is nothing but a big lure to get people LIKE YOU to attend. I grantee it will not just be wooden people burning this year! Do you really think all though Jonestown people knew what was going to happen to them? They too thought they were going to some nifty hippie gathering in South America. The authorities haven been contacted about this but, as one would expect, they aren't too concerned about the fate of a bunch of doped up anarchists in the middle of the desert.      I shit you not fellow fringers, you are warned. I bought my ticket but I, for one, am NOT going--at least not without my gas mask.                          -- CM -- Conrad Maxwell, August 15, 1997 at 8:52p

Y'all- Writing to pass on the news that Chelsea may be attending BM this year. She was invited by our self appointed foreign ambassador, Sam Ember. Her interest was reportedly piqued by the web page, and despite Bill and Hill's reservations, Chel is a willful girl. Chelsea is moving to Palo Alto this Fall to attend Stanford, and Sam felt that BM would be a great primer to how things are done out here on the Left Coast. The prospect of Secret Service roaming the site is an interesting one, presumedly they will forgo the black suits in Hualapai's 100+ degree heat. Look for two motor homes with lots of antennas. Chelsea may not be so easy to spot. She was advised to come in drag, so to speak. If you do, be nice to her, she has been trapped inside the Beltway for a long time.      Single Asian female; ageless; nonprofessional; new to America; searching for virile, confident, ambitious young males of any caste, color or physical description to whom to bear my perfect breasts and shining body and give ecstacies that leave you gasping for more. I never lie. From the moment you see me you will Burn for me, you will never cease Burning, and you will never once satisfy me though you'll live only to try. You will give me your love and I'll answer with scorn. You will give me your life force and I'll turn it into a house you will hate, make you live in it, stuff you daily into a car in which you'll hurl to a job that shames, flays and damns you, and seduce a thousand others while you slave. You will give me your seed and and I will surround you with sullen incomprehensible offspring who'll worship me with the same reasonless intensity with which they'll despise you. You will give me your mind, heart and lingam and I will suck, twist and torment them all, bloating you like a mosquito when you enter my body, laughing at your feeble love thrusts, striking you limp before you come, seducing our sons if you try to flee me, remaining radiant as you grow desperate and old and addled. I never lie. And in the end I will mount you, and will suffocate you, growing enflamed by you at last as you thrash your life away beneath me, driving my tongue down your throat to thwart even your death-rattle, moaning and coming as your soul falls out your rectum, drinking your blood in one draught. I'll let you lie unmourned and unburied. I'll dance in the swamp of your festering body. I'll sing at last of love as your naked soul writhes in flames that I'll journey to hell just to fan. I'll hang your charred and sightless skull on my rosary, force your shrivelled wraith to inhabit it, and make you forgive and adore me for all of this. I never lie. Yet even now you begin to want me. And how swiftly I moisten to your desire, how fast my nipples rise. I feel your heat. My hips, my cavern answer. I writhe as I write this. I anoint breasts and thighs with my sweat and sex, they glisten, they shine now, only for you. Come, my chosen. Do not dare deny me. I am the nightmare you long to wake to at dawn. I am the problem to all your answers. I am the time of your life and the life of your times. I seek a ride to the Burning. -- Seek Ride to the Burning, August 14, 1997 at 11:52p

Fellow moths and mothlettes, just a quick note to pass on a bit of info to consider. I was up at the site this past weekend and things are going well. For those planning to attend understand that the new site is a lot smaller than what you may be familiar with although it's still large enough to allow for many more participants. If this past weekend is any indication of what to expect then there are several things you may want to plan for starting with:      1) count on bringing some sort of a ground cloth if you plan on setting up camp on the playa itself. There are portions of the site which are still a bit damp. Depending on where you'd like to be encamped relative to the Man's location.      2) consider bringing one of those portable shower bags along. As I understand it the communal showers may not be there this year.      3) don't *EVEN* think about driving out on the playa for any reason whatsoever. Though the mud is firm enough walk on in most places cars and trucks - even 4x4s - *WILL* get stuck.      4) consider rethinking your shelter to withstand 40+ mph winds. Though the weather was beautiful, the wind was 'a kickin...      5) pray for the foolish neophytes who arrive with little or no water. Things were damn hot on Saturday and if the weather stays hot like it was this past Saturday you may witness a few absolutely stellar examples of Darwinian selectivity taking place.      6) *If* you bring a dog you need to know that there are cattle roaming about with whom we'll be sharing the site with. They are not going to be at all happy with one or more dogs chasing after them. Also, DO NOT even *think* about going after the few prime areas which have trees. The beasts hang out there to keep cool as well as to feed. Don't be rude and squat on their turf just because they might be wandering around somewhere else. Just a few points to mention here. End transmission..... ps See you there at Camp Bible Burn.. Ray www-leland.stanford.edu/~rruss -- Anon., August 11, 1997 at 8:51p

LAMPLIGHTER MEETING IS AUG 14 THURS. 8PM I am looking for people who would enjoy participating in lighting the lamps which line the pomenade and stretch all the way to the Burning man. The Lamplighters need you! We need individuals of hearty character and sincere disposition to retrieve, clean and relight our many lanterns. Then !!! We get to ceremoniously carry these beacons to their places atop majestic spires, arrayed in the robes of our illustrious order. We'll be located in the center of town, where our ritual, symbolizing the Mythical rebirth and reunion of Maad and his sister Dana, will be re-enacted. I don't have a website, so contact me at (510)535-0800 if you can come to the meeting. Also, if you can sew and know how to use a sewing machine, call me because I need some help making our ceremonial robes. I'm not much of a sewer, but I've got a very good machine. Also, if you can use the following equipment: acetylene torch, circular saw and a drill... in other words if you have previous experience (let's leave the severed hands on the manniquins!): STEVE MOBIA, LAMPLIGHTER EXTRAORDINAIRE has most generously offered the use of his or one of his friend's shops. He will be on hand to direct us in the construction of the hoisting poles and any other miscellaneous things we'll need. Again, the meeting is the place to be to have your questions answered. Right now there seem to be 20 or 30 of us out there, planning to come. Please attend, we value your support! TO GET THE ADDRESS OF MEETING CALL: (510) 535-0800 Leslie -- Leslie Landberg, August 9, 1997 at 10:19p

Once upon a time there was a man named Jed, who when it got hot liked to walk naked, but in the town he live'd in he'd be looked at like a fool, and they'd bust him downtown and they'd lock him in the cool, 'ler that is, so one day Jed went to a place that's far from here, where people walk around in the air without fear, it made him feel free and that makes him kinda giddy, now he's packing up his truck, and heading off to Rock City, Black Rock City that is, looking for theme camps, FOR THE WALKING NAKED -- jed, August 9, 1997 at 1:42p
